Environment and Missions

As a publicly owned port facility, the Port of Bodø shall be future-oriented and represent a standard that takes sustainable development seriously. Our ambition is to facilitate smart solutions and practices for our port and terminals and in so doing contribute to reducing the environmental challenges the world is facing.

Our ambition is to attach increasingly greatest focus to environmental measures. In May 2009, the Port of Bodø became the second port in Norway to gain Eco-Lighthouse certification. Our day-to-day work is based on four of the UN Sustainable Development Goals:

  • Goal 9: Industry, Innovation and infrastructure with the overall objective of sustainable investments
  • Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities with the overall objective of sustainable development
  • Goal 14: Life Below Water with the overall goal of reduced waste and discharges to the sea
  • Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals as an overarching foundation for all the work of the Port of Bodø

Port of Bodø – a green and smart port

The Port of Bodø aims to be a green port with lower greenhouse gas emissions and green technology. This involves sustainable development that satisfies the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. The UN Sustainable Development Goals, which were adopted in 2015, define 17 priority areas that will contribute to tackling climate change through the three dimensions: economy, social conditions and the environment. The UN Sustainable Development Goals form a framework in the Port of Bodø’s plans to be a green port and, in line with the Municipality of Bodø’s climate and energy plan, the Port of Bodø uses the Brundtland Commission’s definition of sustainable development from 1987: “Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”.
